Why are Chinese brush paintings not realism?

Chinese brush painting avoids photographic realism because its primary goal is capturing the spirit, rhythm, and inner essence of a subject rather than its exact physical appearance. Rooted in Taoist philosophy, artists prioritize expressive brushwork, negative space, and subjective feeling over copying nature. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Chinese Landscape Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum (大都会博物馆中国山水画)

The divergence from optical realism comes down to a few core philosophies:

  • Form vs. Spirit: The guiding principle is to depict the invisible "life force" (Qi) of a subject. Famous master Qi Baishi summarized this: "The charm of painting lies in the balance between resemblance and non-resemblance; too much resemblance is vulgar, and too little resembles deception." [1, 2]
  • Dynamic Perspective: Instead of a single, locked-in point of view (like traditional Western art), Chinese landscapes use "shifting perspectives." Viewers are meant to "travel" through the painting, meaning different parts of the scene may be viewed from different angles. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Absence of Light and Shadow: Western realism relies on shading and illumination to give objects a three-dimensional appearance. Chinese art uses lines, ink tones, and deliberate white space (to represent mist or sky). [1, 2]
  • Connection to Calligraphy: Traditional paintings are considered extensions of calligraphy. The rhythm, thickness, and speed of a brushstroke express the artist's personal character and emotions, making the physical mark-making as important as the subject itself. [1, 2, 3, 4]

It's worth noting that highly detailed, realist-leaning styles do exist in Chinese art—such as the meticulous or fine-line (工笔) technique—but even this traditional style prioritizes idealized harmony over exact scientific replication.

Joshua's Landscape paintings - Currently Not for sale

To be titled and mounted

I spent one whole year dedicated to paint only pine trees and nothing else, even though at that time I liked painting court ladies and figures. This kind of exclusive focus was demanded by my teacher Chiang Wuwei and his teacher Pu Xinyu.
